Callahan Eye Hospital & UAB School of Nursing Progress

Project Manager, Rob Harris and Project Engineer, Kyle Moore were both on hand last week to give a few employees a tour of the Callahan Eye Hospital and UAB School of Nursing projects. The projects, which are just across the street from each other, are at different stages of progress with a frenzy of activity continuing as one nears completion and the other recently beginning.

The Callahan Eye Hospital project team is working around the clock, 7 days a week on the multi-phase renovation and operating room expansion of the existing 2nd and 3rd floor. Epoxy flooring in the 8 new operating rooms was just recently completed, with installation of the lights, telescopes and medical gas columns in progress. Areas 1 and 2 have been completed and areas 3 and 4 will be complete within the next two weeks. The Central Sterile room on the 2nd floor is midway through the fourth phase with just 2 phases remaining until completion.

The UAB School of Nursing, which was awarded to M.J. Harris through a hard bid process back in August 2016, is nearing completion of the demolition of the existing 1-story nursing structure. Because of site constraints and space, the tower crane was recently constructed up through an opening created in the middle of the existing structure. The micropile installation in the basement is 90% complete and pile caps will be started shortly. The project has a 20-month duration and is expected to be completed in June 2018.
